I hadn't thought about it that way, but I bet you're absolutely right. They seem to think we all just want to play with one family. And I guess the popularity of the Legacy Challenge would seem to indicate that. But so many people also want to do things like Prosperity Challenges or just create their own thriving town and have things actually make *sense*. I still think a cross between Sims 2/3 and Simville would have been the way to go.

I'm willing to give the expansion a chance, but only after a few months have passed so the mods can ripen and the bugs can be sorted out, and only then if it's at a steeply reduced price!

Forgive me for just catching up on your blog now; I've been taking a break from the Sims 3 in general (though still following some of the forums). Anyway, another great post with which I agree 100%. Although I would add the cow mascot to the "honorable mentions" section of the "Most Annoying NPC" award. His special blend of insulting/slapping/flirting with my college kids was amusing the first time, annoying the next 100.

YES! Thank you. I agree with every single point you brought up. Very well-written post! I haven't been playing the game, but I have been reading the community forums just to keep up with what's going on. I miss my sandbox, darnit, and keep hoping against hope that EA will finally release that neighborhood editor. I have a very bad feeling about World Adventures, for all of the reasons you cited. For the first time ever (going back to the days of Sims 1) I am not the least bit excited about an EP, and I doubt I'll fork over the bucks to buy it. I don't like the direction they're heading, not one bit.

It seems to me like the street names are actually the names of the empty lots, because houses now have separate names. When/if the neighborhood editor ever comes out we'll probably have the ability to name the various "parcels" of land in new towns with our own street names. I don't know we would be able to edit Sunset Valley/Riverview though. It's a bit like the Beautiful Vista modifier; it's not editable with the tools we have at the moment. Which kind of sucks.

As for rabbit holes, it's definitely possible to change the which skill classes are available where but it would need to be a core mod.

BTW I'm probably just as clueless about code as you ;) I basically Ctrl+F through the extracted core files in .NET Reflector to find what I'm looking for.

Another very helpful set of generators. Thank you!

I have a question for you: in your trawling through the Sims 3 code, did you ever by any chance find where the street names are kept? I was just wondering if it's even possible to rename them.

Another thing I'm wondering about (asking you because I'm clueless about code), do you think the rabbit holes would be modifiable? Meaning, if I wanted to move the "Attend a Charisma class" option over to the school, would that be do-able? I was just musing that it would be neat to move all the "attend an X class" over to the school so it could be more like a community college.

Those are fantastic! I just clicked on the art one and got "Impression of Reclining Simulacrum". That rocks. So you can name paintings in TS3? I didn't know that!

Actually I'll post a small update about my quasi-Prosperity in a few days, it's been going pretty well.

TS3 has a lot more "game" in it I agree. I think it's because of Will Wright leaving The Sims to work on Spore. He's all about sandboxes and creativity.
